Proud Builders of Newcastle ANZAC Memorial Walk
Newcastle Memorial Walk is a cliff top walkway in Newcastle, NSW. The elevated walkway is approximately 450m long in total, including a 160m long, 8 span, stainless steel, sinusoidal, truss bridge. The walk follows the approximate alignment of a previous path which had long fallen into disrepair and was dangerous to walk along, with an 80m fall to the rocks below.
The project was constructed using materials and techniques selected to allow for a 70-year maintenance free design life. The boardwalk structure uses composite fibre technology members while the entire deck is constructed using fibre reinforced polymer panels with an integrated non-slip finish. The bridge utilises welded 316 stainless steel spans supported on precast concrete piers and the entire length of the walk uses 316 stainless steel balustrade and handrail.
Waeger Constructions was engaged as the principal contractor in July 2014 to design and construct Newcastle Memorial Walk for a contract sum of $4m. The project was completed on the 25th of March 2015, one month before the ANZAC centenary.
